This Metro Stops Locally

Usually when talking about the metro, one is usually talking about the underground electric railway of some of the world’s biggest and most well known cities, such as washington dc, montreal or, the most well known metro of paris, france. In this case, metro refers to something french, but its not a form of transportation, it’s Downtown Scottsdale’s french restaurant Metro Brasserie & Bar. Luckily for us, it’s only a short walk down the street through Old Town to get to. I almost couldn’t even tell you what the inside of Metro looks like, before we even got there we already knew we wanted a seat outside in the warm autumn sun. Metro boasts a rather expansive shaded outdoor seating area is just next to Southbridge which goes over the ‘canal’ that bridges Scottsdale to the Fashion Square/Waterfront area. Along with the shining sun and pretty scenery, we were also treated to the smooth sounds of a local 3 piece jazz band playing outside just off the patio area. All together it made for a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience.

As usual, whenever possible, i started off with a bloody mary. Eh. It was good, but far from my favorite bloody mary. This bloody mary was lacking the tomatoey thickness, spice, and all the usual bloody mary accoutrements i so look forward to. Also, as was the case for everything we ordered at Metro, i didn’t feel as though i got much value. It’s not the cheapest brunch, which i’m ok with. i just like to know i’m getting what i feel i deserve for whatever dollar amount i’m spending, and in my opinion Metro fell short in that department. while lacking in value, the food was certainly better and more flavorful than the bloody mary was. No surprise here, but the highlight of the meal for me was definitely the tempura fried bacon. The crispy batter gave way to a warm piece of bacon that melted in my mouth. The bourbon maple syrup served with it was actually rather light and had just enough sweetness to match up perfectly with the smoky bacon. The batter nicely soaked up the syrup, and upon one bite my mouth was quickly filled warm, crispy, sweet, syrupy, smoky deliciousness. What goes better with bacon then, well more bacon. My quiche lorraine with smoked bacon was light, fluffy and delicious. Problem is it was too light for me and i left Metro feeling like i could eat a whole other order. Julie went for her usual egg white omelette filled with various veggies and gruyere. “It was good. It was healthy. It was light. It was egg whites.” Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you Julie for the insight…

Would i go back? Yes, but i’m skipping the bloody mary and getting 2 orders of fried bacon. The fried bacon itself is worth going back for. And i’d probably try the bananas foster french toast. I’d also like to go back and give dinner a shot.
